John Cromwell Mather (ur. 7 sierpnia 1946 w Roanoke) – amerykański astrofizyk pracujący w Goddard Space Flight Center. W 2006 wspólnie z George'em Smootem został uhonorowany Nagrodą Nobla w dziedzinie fizyki „za odkrycie zgodności mikrofalowego promieniowania tła z modelem ciała doskonale czarnego i obserwację anizotropii tegoż promieniowania”[1]. Był pomysłodawcą budowy satelity COBE, dzięki któremu udało się potwierdzić teorię Wielkiego Wybuchu.

Nine Year Microwave Sky

The detailed, all-sky picture of the infant universe created from nine years of WMAP data. The image reveals 13.77 billion year old temperature fluctuations (shown as color differences) that correspond to the seeds that grew to become the galaxies. The signal from our galaxy was subtracted using the multi-frequency data. This image shows a temperature range of ± 200 microKelvin.
