Cerro Azul – czynny wulkan na wyspie Isabela w archipelagu Galapagos. Wznosi się na wysokość 1640 m n.p.m. Ostatnia erupcja miała miejsce w maju 2008 roku.

Opis

Cerro Azul (1640 m n.p.m.) położony jest na południowo-zachodnim krańcu wyspy Isabela[1]. Jego kaldera o wymiarach 4 x 5 km ma głębokość 650 m, a po jej południowo-zachodniej i zachodniej stronach znajdują się terasy[1]. W kalderze znajduje się również wielki stożek tufu wulkanicznego świadczący o erupcjach freatycznych[1]. W zachodniej części kaldery wytworzyły się liczne stożki wulkaniczne[1]. Zastygłe potoki lawy znajdują się na północno-wschodnich i północno-zachodnich stokach[1]. W kalderze aktywne są fumarole[1].

Erupcje

Erupcje miały miejsce w latach: 1932, 1940, 1943, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1959, 1979, 1998 i 2008[2].

Ostatni wybuch Cerro Azul odnotowano w maju 2008 roku[2].

A large tuff cone occupies the ENE side of the summit caldera of Cerro Azul volcano at the SW tip of Isabela Island. A small caldera bench is seen above the cone at the upper right, and a larger bench on the northern side of the caldera is outlined by the light-colored line below the horizon at the upper left. The 4 x 5 km wide caldera is one of the smallest of the Galápagos shield volcanoes, but its 650 m depth makes it one of the deepest. Youthful dark-colored lava flows at the left cover much of the caldera floor.
