Minnesota była dziewiętnastym stanem przyjętym do Unii po pierwszych trzynastu, o czym świadczy dziewiętnaście złotych gwiazdek. Przynależność do Unii symbolizuje, dodatkowo, błękitny kolor flagi. Dewiza L'Etoile du Nord (Gwiazda Północna) nawiązuje do tego, że swego czasu był to najbardziej wysunięty na północ stan USA. Centralną postacią na stanowej pieczęci jest oracz na tle krajobrazu prerii z wodospadem i drzewami w oddali. Na drugim planie jest pędzący na zachód Indianin na koniu.
