12. Mistrzostwa świata w łyżwiarstwie szybkim w wieloboju sprinterskim odbyły się w Grenoble, we Francji, w dniach 21–22 lutego 1981. Zawody rozegrano na sztucznym torze olimpijskim Parc Paul Mistral, Anneau de Vitesse. Zawodnicy dwukrotnie startowali na dystansach 500 i 1000 metrów. Złote medale zawisnęły na szyjach reprezentantki NRD Karin Enke oraz Norwega Frode Rønning.

W zawodach wzięło udział 31 łyżwiarek (wszystkie sklasyfikowane) i 34 łyżwiarzy (30 sklasyfikowanych) z 16 krajów.
