Rzut oszczepem kobiet był jedną z konkurencji rozgrywanych podczas XII mistrzostw Europy w Pradze. Kwalifikacje rozegrano 31 sierpnia, a finał 1 września 1978 roku. Zwyciężczynią tej konkurencji została reprezentantka Niemieckiej Republiki Demokratycznej, złota medalistka mistrzostw w 1974 Ruth Fuchs, która w finale ustanowiła rekord Europy wynikiem 69,16 m. W rywalizacji wzięło udział szesnaście zawodniczek z jedenastu reprezentacji.

ADN-ZB Libers-29.04.1980 Split: Einen neuen Weltrekord im Speerwurf stellte die zweimalige DDR-Olympiasiegerin Ruth Fuchs, hier bei einem früheren Wettkampf, in Split auf. Die 33jährige kam auf 69,96 m und verbesserte ihre alte Rekordmarke um 44 cm.
