Szwecja administracyjnie podzielona jest na 21 regionów (szw. län) – odpowiedników polskich województw. Na czele każdego regionu stoi rada regionu (szw. länsstyrelse).
Regiony dzielą się na gminy (szw. kommun), których jest 290. Ostatnią gminą, która powstała w 2003 roku, jest Knivsta, wydzielona z gminy Uppsala.
