W 2013 roku odbył się 91 mecz o Tarczę Wspólnoty, w którym zmierzyli się tradycyjnie zwycięzcy Premier League – Manchester United i Pucharu Anglii – Wigan Athletic. Zwycięzcę wyłonił mecz na Wembley w Londynie. Po raz pierwszy od 1980 roku o Tarczę zagrał zespół z Championship. W tymże meczu zadebiutowała na angielskich boiskach technologia Goal-line[1].
Mecz zakończył się zwycięstwem Manchesteru United, który zdobył to trofeum po raz 20. Obydwa gole dla Czerwonych Diabłów strzelił Robin van Persie. To także pierwsze trofeum w karierze dla managera United Davida Moyesa.
