Canary Wharf: The Hibbert Gate & 1 West India Quay, E14 This is not, alas, strictly speaking a comparison between the old and the new because the Hibbert Gate is a replica commissioned by the Canary Wharf Group plc. The original Hibbert gate stood at the main entrance to the West India Docks, and was so named because of the model of the boat on top of it. The inscription in the pediment reads "THE WEST INDIA IMPORT DOCK BEGAN 12th JULY 1800, OPENED FOR BUSINESS 1st SEPT. 1802." The gate lasted until 1932 when unsurprisingly its narrow archway was considered to be impeding traffic.

The graceful curved glass-fronted building in the distance is No. 1 West India Quay. This 33 storey building, completed in 2004, contains the Marriott Hotel with 301 rooms and 47 serviced apartments on the lowest floors, and 152 luxury apartments and 6 penthouse suites on the upper floors. The building is 111 metres (or 364 feet) high and currently ranks as the 22nd highest building in London.
