After he had arranged forthe big link, when his draftsman was lay-ing out his valve motion he interfered withhim, and said he would like this lengthof link, and an order came to put it on theswitching engine as well as the others.This was done, but it was found with hisrocker on, the length it was necessary tomake it, his links would be dragging alongon the ties loosely. The order was thengiven to cut oflt the end of the links,and the engine was put into service in thatway. It was utterly impossible to get theengine squared, but it was running in thiscondition for a long time. One dollars worth of ordinary com-mercial gold leaf will, it is said, cover 900square inches; but this material is thickcompared with the gold leaf that is nowmade by depositing the yellow metal byelectricity in a bath upon a highly polishedsheet of copper.
