At the cemetery in Buzuluk. Pile of 70-80 human corpses, mostly children, who were found dead in the course of a 2-day period. Excerpt from a telegram sent by Fridtjof Nansen from Moscow to the Red Cross Dec. 9, 1921: «(...) Have visited Samara region stop Misery worse than darkest imagination stop Buzuluk district where Friends work has 915,000 inhabitants of whom 537,000 have no food left stop 30,405 died in September October November but deathrate rapidly increasing and before spring at least two thirds of population will perish if help not promptly forthcoming (...)». One of the pictures from Russia in November and December 1921. On assignment from the International Red Cross, Fridtjof Nansen visited the regions that were the hardest hit by famine.
