Opis:
Still image from footage of a Royal Air Force Libyan coastal radar station near Brega, destroyed by RAF Tornado GR4 aircraft in May 2011.

In the attack on May 24, the radar head at the station was destroyed with a single Dual Mode Seeker Brimstrone missile.

While the missile is designed for use against vehicles, and usually only used in that role, it was chosen as the most appropriate weapon for a precision strike.

The relatively small warhead on the Brimstone missile meant that the aircrew could destroy the radar without destroying the building, and also ensure the risk of death and injury was minimised.

All NATO strikes are carried out after full checks have been made to minimise collateral damage. Aircrew also choose weapons and attack tactics in line with this principle.

The destruction of the radar degrades the Qadhafi regime's ability to monitor shipping and direct attacks against NATO or civilian vessels.

This is the first time in Operation ELLAMY that Brimstone has been used against a target that was not a vehicle.

This still image was captured from footage taken by one of the aircraft involved in the coordinated attack.
