“Gold Star medal”. The Gold Star medal of the Hero of the Russian Federation is the highest special insignia. Established from 1939 to distinguish the title "Hero of the Soviet Union" from other Order of Lenin recipients. After the demise of the Soviet Union, this medal was re-instituted in 1992 as a distinctive badge to the title "Hero of Russia".
