T FROM WITHIN miraculous change. i\ll engines cease tothrob, voices cease to shout, and there is anintense and strange silence. The crew attheir stations stand by, looking strained andexpectant at the Captain, whose eye-balls—which reflect a ghostly green—are still gluedto the periscope which revolves as he himselfmoves round the platform. Keep an eye on destroyer bearing 30red, he breaks the silence with. The activity begins afresh. At a motionfrom the Captain, I mount the foremostperiscope and try to pick up the enemy.The atmosphere above the water is still hazy,and at first all I can see is a blur. For amoment I look to see whether I can adjustthe lens to suit my sight! But as I moveround, the unmistakable outlines of adestroyer come into focus until one canalmost make out her number. But she movesrapidly out of the picture, and you have tofollow her hurriedly. She seems to be goingat a terrific speed, but a mere turn of theperiscope defeats all her splendid efforts toget away.

A SUBMARINE CRUISER AT SEA 241 The Captain on the after periscope shoutsout an order hurriedly and excitedly. He isbody and soul in his work and the men seemto catch his whole-hearted enthusiasm. Immediate action! Down foremostperiscope! The order rings out like a siren, and atonce all becomes bustle bordering on pande-monium. In the midst of this hubbub Iclear ofi at the run to the torpedo-room, forI am hungry to see everything. This torpedoquarter at the nose of the submarine is cooland well stored with ammunition. The greatshining torpedoes are nicely shelved ; butone shelf is empty. The torpedo which wasthere is now in Tube No. i and the operatoris anxiously standing by till the word (orsignal) comes to fire it by electricity—or ifthat happen to fail, as the lieutenant warnshim, to fire her by hand.
